| 12/1/2007 | Click to Display Winter 2007 A Note from the President It is almost the end of the first year for this slate of SSR Officers and time to summarize what has been accomplished during the year so far and where we now stand. Financially we have reversed the downtrend and now have a net worth of $10,000. This was achieved by replacing the newspaper format of the Journal Box with this 8.5 by 11 inch Xerox style publication. It contains all of the vital Region information including Minutes, Committee Reports and announcements. What is missing are the advertisements, but they hadn’t been paid for in about 2 years anyway. These are readily available from the web, or other hobby publications. The NMRA Directory of Manufacturers is a great place to look, as well as your local yellow pages. A significant donation from Marty Megregian has also been a boon to the Region finances, along with increased activity by Bob Gollings, Chair of Ways and Means. Income for the year so far has been $7000, and expenses were $3800. Please understand that Bob Gangwish has done an outstanding job as editor of the JB and continues to do so. While discussing web sites, Dan Cioffi has done an outstanding job of creating a totally new SSR web site. It is organized on a data base platform which will provide maximum security to members while providing the ability for electronic communication. If you haven’t done so, visit Sunshineregion.org to acquaint yourself with this new modern up to date website for our Region. Congratulations and Thanks to Dan for a job well done. The Region is back to two conventions a year with the spring 2008 one being hosted by Ridge Model Railroad Club and the fall one by Deerfield Beach. Both of these organizations have previously hosted one or more Region Conventions and we need to support these Clubs and show them it was worth their effort to assume the responsibility of hosting an event such as this. Other developments include work that is underway to file for 501 (c)(3) tax exemption status with the Internal Revenue Service. This is a big undertaking requiring a great deal of time to satisfy all the IRS requirements to grant the exemption. It will allow a donor to treat a contribution to the Region as a tax deductible event for personal Income Taxes. Special arrangements can be set up to obtain the benefit for a Division as well. Of a down note, Al Feinsod Jr. MMR has resigned as Vice President of the Region. Al has been an active member and a contributor for many years and will be missed. I asked Al if his decision was reversible and he stated no, so we all wish Al the very best and thank him for his many contributions. Marvin Kempner has stepped forward to fill in for Al’s remaining term. There seems to be an increased level of member interest and participation. Membership is growing and the Division Meets being held by the Western Division have attracted much interest. These are one day meets that a member can attend and be home again within a single day. The last of these was in Ft Myers at Scale Rails and was preceded by a SSR Board Meeting. At Board Meeting (abbreviated Minutes included in this issue), everything was brought up to date except one carry over item from the Ocala meeting. Work is still being done on a restatement of the duties of Division Superintendents. This has been delegated to a committee consisting of the four Superintendents to come back to the Board with recommended language. A lot more needs to be done, but it must be remembered that model Railroading is a hobby and the Region achievements |
| 9/1/2007 | Click to Display Fall 2007 Greetings to all!! I couldn’t be happier about the frenzy of activity going on in our Western Division. Other mentions of this are also contained in this issue of the JB such as the turnout at the latest meet in Plant City - 65 model railroaders - the number of models being brought for display and the popularity contest (about 30) and last but not least the new FREMO group which is proud of the 5 modules that have now been built. There is another aspect of these one day Division Meets that particularly excites me. It is comradery evident when this many modelers get together and share their experiences, achievements, ideas and helpful hints. Fortunately Plant City had access to an ideal facility for an event such as this. It was a large room at the Hillsborough Community College. The open fl oor area was set up for clinics and the various models were displayed on tables along both sides of the room. As one observed the activity there was a wide variety of conversations going on, all at once, around the models, the FREMO layout and the coffee pot. Hats off to Western Division for initiating these one day meets. They are attracting people we hadn’t met before (such as the members of the RR Club at the “Villages”) and a number of “lone wolf’ modelers that we would love to bring into the fold. The enthusiasm seemed to start with the Ocala Regional Convention. This outstanding event created an air of interest that was nurtured and carried on until the one day meets got under way. A big “Thanks” to Jim Kellow, MMR, Western Division Superintendent as his 5 Assistant Supers. They have been the sparkplugs to ignite this degree of model railroading interest in Sunshine Region. The next event is being scheduled for October 20 in Ft. Myers and will be hosted by Scale Rails of SW Florida. Based on the turnouts now being experienced, the Club has arranged for additional facilities near their Clubhouse to hold the Meet. Please mark October 20 on your calendar. A BOD meeting (but not a general membership meeting) will be held late in the preceding afternoon. All SSR We are honored to have Mike Brestel, President of NMRA joining us for the BOD meeting and the Division meet on the 20th. It is indeed an honor to have the National President take the time to join us and I hope we express our gratitude with a great turnout for the meet. Thanks to all who have volunteered and participated in the Division Region activities. This is tryly becoming “the best Region Under the Sun” in the “Greatest Hobby on Earth.” Sincerely,

Hi to you All! First let me apologize for not giving you any communication for some time. The first attempt at a hard copy of the Journal Box failed because of the job assignments that the appointed editor suddenly faced at work. During this same period a project to revise the web site became stalled for a like reason. Therefore we were, for all intents and purposes, flying blind for a period of time. We now have a revised approach with Bob Gangwish, the prior editor, taking the J.B. helm again. We look forward to Bob’s first issue of the 12 page Journal Box and wish him well in his pursuit. Dan Coiffi is building a new web site for the Region, which early indications say will be a knock out. Both of these are scheduled to be live starting in July. |

First, let me express my appreciation to Bob Gangwish for his four years in the office of President. Many changes occurred during that period, some of which need to be recognized and understood to evaluate our future as a region. The structural changes occurring at the National level have had a pronounced effect on the financial posture and membership for our Region. Under the new system we are precluded from charging dues of Region membership. Everyone who is an NMRA member and who resides within our territory is now an automatic member of the Sunshine Region. From the dues paid to National the region receives $2.00. Previously we collected $6.00 per member and distributed the Journal Box publication. Life membership is another story, but results in the Region receiving 50 cents per year. In anticipation of these changes the BOD voted to discontinue printing the prior newspaper style of publication for the Journal Box. Continuation of that process would have resulted in a compete depletion of our treasury in 3 issues. The replacement newsletter is designed to break even at the $6.00 subscription rate, so the only unallocated income of the Region is the $2.00 per member from National or about $1200.00 per year. We need to find new ways to generate a revenue stream for the Region. The good news is that anyone who belongs to NMRA is a Region member. Currently this results in 648 members. Of the 648, all of whom were sent ballots for the recent election, only 172 responded, or about a 26% return. Some of this may be because only 2 positions were being contested (more than 1 candidate), but then I ask, why aren’t our members vying for these positions of leadership. The long and the short of it is we seem to have a lack of interest and participation by our membership. In an attempt to address this issue, I am planning on holding a series of meetings around the state with various clubs and individuals (whether they belong to NMRA or not) so long as they are model railroaders. During these meetings we will attempt to find out what the membership feels is missing, what they want to see added to make them fully involved and active in the Region activities. The meetings will address and inventory what are perceived to be the Region "strengths", "weaknesses", "opportunities" and "threats". From these inventories we will jointly develop a strategic plan of actions and programs that will make the Region more valuable and interesting to its members. I am calling this thrust operation Resurrect and Rebuild (borrowing the RR from railroad, our common interest). Any club or group interested in participating in this effort please contact your Division Superintendent or me. The groups will be 10-15 in size and I will act as a "facilitator" to draw out their feelings and thoughts. Reports on the progress of Operation Resurrect and Rebuild will be published as we progress. The whole idea is to increase member awareness and participation in Region activities. A few announcements need to be made. In deference to Walt Roberge’s current health problems we are going to give him a break from being Convention Chairman, except for the Registrar responsibility for the Ocala Convention. Dennis Little has agreed to take on this responsibility. Tom Wilson has asked to be relieved of his duties as Contest Chair. Since this aligns so close with the AP program, Jim Kellow GMRR has agreed to sweep in Contests to his role as AP Chairman. In order to maintain a meaningful membership file, Peter Gross will assume the Membership Chair along with his duties as Secretary. Since many of our prior |
